The Kirin Whip is an all-metal soft weapon born of the Chinese martial arts tradition. Its body is forged through a tapered-graded process — the chain narrows from handle to tip across 8 to 13 stepped stages. This unique structure lets energy advance wave by wave with each swing, channeling force with precision all the way to the cracker.
Unlike leather bullwhips or cord whips, the Kirin Whip is built entirely from a metal chain — defined by a distinctive steel character, a crisp ringing crack, and a handling style all its own.
麒麟鞭，是源自中国武术的全金属软兵器。其鞭身采用锥形渐变工艺锻造，链条经 8 至 13 级阶梯式收束。这种独特的结构设计，能让挥舞时的能量层层递进，将力道精准贯透至鞭梢。

In the classical Chinese hierarchy of eighteen weapons, the chain whip stands at the ninth position — placed squarely among the elite category of "soft weapons" (软兵器). These are the only class of weapons that flow rather than strike rigidly: they wrap, they whip, they crack — three principles no rigid blade can match.
在中国传统兵器谱"十八般兵器"之中，链条鞭位列第九——属于"软兵器"一脉，即不以刚硬出击、而以流动取胜的器械之列。缠、抽、爆三诀，是刚兵所不能及。

Chinese records first mention the chain whip during the Jin Dynasty (265–420 AD), roughly 1,700 years ago. It enters the battlefield as a fearsome close-combat weapon — flexible enough to reach past a shield's edge, deadly enough to crack bone.
中国典籍最早于晋代（265–420 年）记载链条软兵器，距今约 1,700 年。它作为近战兵器登上战场——柔软能绕过盾沿，刚烈能击碎骨头。

Over the centuries, the chain whip enters the formal training of major martial-arts schools — most notably the Shaolin Temple. The Nine-Section Whip emerges as the most refined form of this lineage, codified through generations of monks and masters.

In Shenyang, martial artist Wang Jinlong (王金龙, 1952–2014) — who began training at age 12 and mastered the Nine-Section Whip and Meteor Hammer — begins to imagine a new kind of weapon: a chain that flows like the soft whip, but cracks like thunder.
沈阳武术家王金龙先生（12 岁习武，尤精九节鞭、流星锤）开始构想一种新器械：既能像软鞭一样自如挥舞，又能发出雷鸣般的爆响。这就是麒麟鞭的火种。
原 型 锻 造
Wang forges his first prototype — uniform iron links, handle on one end, cloth strip on the other. It cracks, but not cleanly. He keeps refining and refining: tapered steel chains of uneven thickness, every link hand-forged, until the whip body produces what his own notes describe as "thunder breaking from the air."
王金龙先生锻造出第一代原型：粗细一致的铁链，一端把手、一端布条——能响，但还不够利。他不断改良：采用粗细不均的钢链，每一环全手工锻造，直至鞭体舞动能产生他笔记中所形容的——"其音若雷轰鸣，若响鞭炸耳"的震撼效果。

At a Liaoning provincial training camp, Wang meets Chang Donghai (常东海), a national-level wushu coach who has adapted Daoist fly-whisk technique into a flowing softness art. The two principles fuse — and the 金龙鞭 (Jinlong Whip) is born: hard and soft, in one weapon.
辽宁省武术队集训中，王金龙先生结识国家武术高级教练常东海先生——他将武当方前辈以拂尘技法改编的软鞭融入。二人相会，二技相融，金龙鞭就此诞生：钢与柔、刚与韵，集于一鞭。
麒 麟 之 名
Master Zhao Chiyu (赵赤宇) refines and standardizes the chain whip — defining its taper ratios, codifying the complete whip-form curriculum, securing the equipment patent and the choreography copyright. He names the art officially: 中华麒麟鞭 (China Kirin Whip). From this year on, the Kirin Whip has a proper standard, a proper name, and a defining grandmaster.
武术家赵赤宇先生对链条鞭进行标准化定型——确立锥形比例、创编完整鞭法套路、申请器械专利与鞭法套路著作权。1999 年，正式命名为中华麒麟鞭。自此，麒麟鞭有了规范的形制，有了正式的名号，也有了奠基的一代宗师。
报 纸 与 镜 头
May 2003 — 《体育天地》newspaper features Wang Jinlong as "China's First Whip". December 2009 — CCTV5's 《体育人间》 broadcasts "Shenyang's Divine Whip", bringing the art to a nationwide audience. The chain whip is no longer a Shenyang park curiosity — it is a national folk art.
2003 年 5 月，《体育天地》以"中国第一鞭——访金龙鞭发明人王金龙先生"为题刊文。2009 年 12 月，CCTV5《体育人间》播出"沈阳神鞭"专题，将这门艺术推向全国。链子鞭不再只是沈阳公园里的稀奇——它已是全国公认的民间艺术。
世 界 倾 听
In 2025, craftsman Yile Chang (常逸乐) — working from his workshop at the foot of Mount Song, home of Shaolin — set out to bring the Kirin Whip to the world beyond China. He launched the first English-language website dedicated to the art, breaking down every chain variant and technique in plain English. He began sharing the craft on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
His work earned recognition from international whip masters — Anthony De Longis, Adam "Crack" Winrich, Jacques Ze Whipper, Master Gay, Martin, and others. For the first time in 1,700 years, the Kirin Whip cracks across continents.
2025 年，登封匠人常逸乐先生从嵩山脚下出发，决意将麒麟鞭真正带向中国之外的世界。他建立了首个完全英文的麒麟鞭网站，将这门艺术的每一种链型、每一种技法系统化拆解；并在 YouTube、TikTok、Facebook、Instagram、X 等平台分享传统鞭法。
他的工作得到了 Anthony De Longis、Adam "Crack" Winrich、Jacques Ze Whipper、Gay 大师、Martin 等海外鞭术名家的认可。1,700 年来，麒麟鞭第一次真正响彻五大洲。

何 以 名 麒 麟
The Kirin (麒麟) is among China's most sacred and auspicious creatures — a mythical beast woven through three millennia of Chinese culture. Ancient texts say it walks the earth so gently it does not bend a single blade of grass. It harms no living thing. It appears only in times of great peace and wise rulership.
麒麟（qí lín），是中国最神圣、最祥瑞的神兽之一——三千年中华文化中始终贯穿的灵兽。古籍记载，麒麟行走人间不踏伤草木，不伤生灵，唯太平盛世、明君当政之时方出。
For over 3,000 years, the Kirin has symbolized virtue, prosperity, power, and good fortune. To name a weapon after this creature is not vanity — it is a declaration.

Because the Kirin embodies the deepest paradox in Chinese martial art: power that does not need to harm. The whip cracks; it does not strike. It summons thunder; it draws no blood.

At the very end of each Kirin Whip is a small cracker — sometimes ribbon, sometimes Dyneema cord. When the whip is thrown correctly, this cracker momentarily exceeds the speed of sound. The thunderclap you hear is not a slap on the air. It is air itself, breaking.
