Flat chain — flowing family

Smooth oval links, fluid in the swing. The chain glides like water — graceful, expressive, and forgiving for tricks.

Bamboo chain — striking family

Block-segment links accelerate sharply through the air, delivering a more concentrated crack with stronger explosive power. Despite the bold sculpted look — they can also flow into fluid tricks.

The classic. Smooth oval links, clean profile. Most fluid in the swing — the everyman's choice.

Each link is a forged hex nut, flattened by hand. The internal threading creates a subtle ridged texture — mechanical pedigree, classic chain rhythm.

双 棱 麦 穗

Twin parallel ridges along each link. Refined visual texture, rhythmic glint under light.

Manganese steel chain
Special · For Heavyweight

Manganese Steel

锰 钢 链

An industrial-strength alloy — the same grade used in crane chains and heavy lifting equipment. Reserved exclusively for our Heavyweight Power series, where its hardness and impact resistance make it the only sensible choice. Lesser steels would fatigue under the punishment.

Rope Whip

绳 鞭

A different category entirely — and one of our most striking creations. A vibrant synthetic-fiber outer braid — Dyneema or Dimension — wraps a manganese chain core. Visually mesmerizing in motion, ferociously powerful in the crack. Quieter to swing, safer at distance, yet delivers explosive force matching pure steel. Lives in the Long Handle collection.

The Handle

把 手

Two questions: how does it move, and what does it feel like?

Fixed and bearing handles compared side by side
Recommended for Beginners · 推荐新手

Fixed Handle

固 定 把 手

The chain is rigidly connected to the handle. This gives you precise directional control — you always know exactly where the chain is going. Experts who perform complex routines and ornamental whip techniques overwhelmingly prefer the fixed handle.

★★★★★ Control
Specialist Option · 特定用途

360° Bearing Handle

轴 承 把 手

An internal ball-bearing connector that rotates freely. Rarely used in standard Kirin Whip practice — it is specifically designed for the Long-Pole Kirin Whip, where the practitioner holds a long rigid pole and the rotation is needed to swing the chain. For everyday Kirin Whip practice, choose the fixed handle.

★★★☆☆ General Use

All beginners must start with a fixed handle. The fixed handle is where you build your technique, your timing, and your muscle memory. All advanced ornamental and routine whip forms depend on fixed-handle foundations that cannot be skipped.

Common Questions

Before You Choose

常 见 问 题

Care & Maintenance

保 养

01 How do I prevent rust on the chain?

304 stainless steel chains require no maintenance at all — they will not rust, even under regular use. Cobalt alloy, bearing steel, and manganese steel chains simply need to stay dry and away from humidity — no oiling needed, just don't let them sit wet.

The only part that needs active care is the wooden long-pole handles (red pear wood, wenge): apply a thin coat of walnut oil every few months to keep the wood from drying out and cracking.

Industrial rubber, cowhide, and stainless steel handles need no special care at all.

02 When should I replace the cracker?

The cracker — the colored fiber tip — wears down naturally with use. Replace it when it has frayed to less than half its original length. Each whip ships with replacement crackers, and additional packs are available inexpensively from any product page or by emailing info@kirinwhip.com.

Learning & Practice

入 门

03 How long does it take to learn?

A clean crack typically comes within a few days of consistent practice. Tricks and martial forms take weeks to months depending on weight and your goals. Heavier whips have a steeper physical curve — start lighter than you think. Most newcomers find the 1.7–2.2 lb Light tier the most rewarding starting point.

04 Smooth chain vs. sculpted chain — which should I pick?

Both are excellent. Flowing chains (Flat, Threaded, Wheat, Double Petal) glide more fluidly — best for tricks and flow practice. Striking chains (Dragon Bone, Bamboo, Date Pit, Gourd, Azure Dragon) deliver a sharper, more concentrated crack. For newcomers the difference is subtle — choose by aesthetic preference; the rest comes with practice.

Safety & Space

安 全

05 Is it safe to practice?

A Kirin Whip is more predictable than a Western bullwhip — the chain is heavy and follows a clear arc, less prone to unexpected recoil. But it is still a steel chain at high speed. Keep at least 5 meters (16 ft) clear of bystanders, pets, and breakables. Wear closed-toe shoes. Start slow and build up gradually. Gloves are included with every whip.

06 Where should I practice — what space do I need?

Outdoors is ideal — a quiet park, parking lot, courtyard, or driveway. You'll need a clear circle of at least 4 meters (13 ft) in radius for normal whips, more for heavyweight or long-handle. Indoor practice is only suitable for very large open halls (martial arts studios, large garages). Both concrete and grass are fine.

Heritage & Logistics

传 承 · 物 流

07 What's the difference between a Kirin Whip and a Western bullwhip?

Two distinct traditions. A bullwhip is rope or leather, achieving its crack through a tapered braid that breaks the sound barrier at the tip. A Kirin Whip is metal-chain, achieving its crack through chain segments accelerating to crack speed. Different feel, different sound, different aesthetic — the Kirin Whip is heavier, more theatrical, and originates from Chinese martial arts rather than cattle herding. The Kirin Whip's history runs 1,700 years deep, modernized in 1999 by Master Zhao Chiyu.

08 What if my whip arrives damaged or with missing parts?

Email info@kirinwhip.com immediately with photos of the issue. Every whip ships in shock-resistant packaging and is verified twice before leaving the workshop — but if anything is wrong, we resolve it (replacement, refund, or both). Each whip's exact contents are described in detail on its product page.
