Born in Shenyang in 1952, he began training at twelve and studied under several teachers — Tongbei long boxing, Shaolin, mantis and Wudang, along with sabre, staff, sword, nine-section whip and meteor hammer. Soft weapons were where he was strongest. The Beijing rope-dart master Yao Dongsheng thought so highly of Wang’s reworked meteor hammer that he gave it a name of its own: the Golden Dragon Hammer.
He was also a factory man. Every surviving manuscript is written on union notepaper from the Shenyang Cable Factory; he was named an outstanding production worker for years running, and took commendations from militia training and a provincial military-district reconnaissance grappling demonstration. Martial arts and working life were never separate things.

By the seventies his name was known across the martial circles of Liaoning. Practising the nine-section whip in Shenyang’s Beiling Park, his whip tangled with a Daoist priest’s cowhide whip. As the two men drew apart, the leather snapped back with a single crisp crack that carried across the ground. What if the steel chain’s force could carry the leather whip’s voice?
He started by fixing a strip of coloured silk to the tail of his nine-section whip — and found it kept the steel’s force while gaining a bright, cracking report. This is the year the Golden Dragon Whip begins.
The work took more than ten years. He began in the stairwell of a neighbourhood office in Shenyang’s Tiexi district, welding the links one at a time and grinding each one smooth. Across a thousand attempts he reworked the nine-section whip’s shape and balance, arriving at a chain of uneven thickness — heavy at the hand, fine at the tail — until the body of the whip produced what his own notes describe as “a sound like thunder, a crack that splits the ear.”
Competing in Shenyang, at Shanghai’s Great World, and at the First National Farmers’ Games, he took gold medals and first places — three years before the whip itself reached its final form.
At a Liaoning provincial wushu training camp he met Chang Donghai, a national-level senior coach and Xingyi master. Over the years that followed the two exchanged knowledge and co-created the whip’s techniques and routines, drawing in the softening methods of the Daoist fly-whisk and the cowhide soft whip. With that the system was whole.
In 1993 the two met again in Liaoyang. Wang commissioned a calligrapher for two pieces — Donghai Whip and Golden Dragon Whip — and said: “Without Donghai, there would be no Golden Dragon.”
By 1991 both the instrument and the full curriculum were fixed. Fellow martial artists named the whip after him, and within a few years it had spread through the parks of Shenyang.
Fifty to seventy links of stainless steel, tapering from thick to thin. A cowhide-wrapped handle. A whip head of roughly forty centimetres, and tied at the end a rectangular strip of coloured silk cloth — the part that makes the sound.
The four whips below are not replicas. They are the whips he used himself, kept by the lineage: from the 1.3-jin competition whip to the 2.3-jin whip he trained raw power with.
The Golden Dragon Whip is the foundation of every modern crack whip. Wang built his for combat; the modern whip evolved from it toward fitness and flow — carrying his art to millions.

The Golden Dragon Whip was made for combat, not display. Its vocabulary runs to splitting, smashing, sweeping, striking and swinging — with signature moves found nowhere else: the throw-whip and the smash-whip.
Chang Donghai left a standing reminder for every practitioner: this belongs to martial arts. It demands the intent of attack and defence, the correct unity of hand, eye, body and step — and above all, the empty hand must never rest.
At the 1996 Games in Shanghai, the warm-up alone brought the arena to a standstill — officials crowded round to watch one man train. He took the silver. Afterwards the grand master Cai Longyun came down, took his hand, and said:

To pass the art on whole, he spent his later years writing. Route charts first, then the manual itself — every routine, every technique named, the principles set down in verse. All of it on Shenyang Cable Factory union notepaper, dated in his own hand.

The press called him an inventor. He never used that word about himself. Among the papers is a statement written in his own hand — Wude Jianding, a declaration of martial conduct — in which he set down what he believed he had done.

Chuàngbiān (创编) — to create and codify, building on what was inherited. Not a claim to have made something from nothing. The distinction is his own, and this page keeps it.
Well past fifty he was still teaching for free in Shenyang’s parks, demonstrating everything himself. By his later years more than two hundred people were practising the whip in those parks, all students of one teacher. He died on 19 November 2014.
The Golden Dragon Whip was created and codified by Wang Jinlong, with Chang Donghai co-creating its techniques and routines. The lineage below records Wang Jinlong’s own line of transmission.
The Golden Dragon Whip left its mark on every chain whip that followed. Today the chain whip is a nationwide pastime: schools have multiplied, methods have multiplied, forms have multiplied — the field is in full bloom. Which is all the more reason to remember how it got here, and the people whose work made it possible.
