If you only ever own one kind of fall, own this one. The mat-weave sits exactly in the middle — soft enough to steer, firm enough to drive — and it's the only fall we make that scales from a 600 g practice whip all the way to the heaviest training whips built. Beginners get on with it immediately. So do people who've been cracking for twenty years.

The name
竹席

A zhúxí is a woven bamboo sleeping mat — a fixture of Chinese summers for centuries, and the pattern this braid reproduces exactly. Flat, over-under, tight and even. We named it after the mat because that is plainly what it looks like.

Find Your Length

Fall length scales with whip weight — and so do thickness and mass. A fall sized for a 1 kg flow whip will feel weightless on a 15 kg whip and won't turn over at all. The table below is our workshop's own sizing standard:

Hand-Braided, So Expect Small Variations

Please note

Every fall is braided by hand, one at a time. Lengths will vary slightly from the figures above — that's the nature of handwork, not a defect.

It makes no difference to how the whip performs. The fall still runs smooth, the energy still transfers cleanly, and the crack is unaffected. A centimetre either way is invisible in the arc.

The One Fall That Fits Everything

This is the widest-ranging fall in the catalogue, by some distance. Hollow-braid and ultra-soft falls top out around 1 kg. The mat-weave keeps going: heavier whips simply take a longer, thicker, heavier version of the same braid. At the extreme end — the very heaviest training whips we build — this is the only fall that works at all.

The Fraying Is Not a Flaw

What experienced crackers know

A polyethylene mat-weave fuzzes up with use, and after a while it stops looking new. That's the honest downside — cosmetic, not functional. The raised fibers actually increase air drag, drag slows the tip, and a slower tip is a tip you can steer. Plenty of people find a fall handles better after it has broken in.

Fitting It

On light whips the fall is tied straight onto the chain with cord. The knot matters: a direct tie transmits energy with almost no loss, so whip and fall move as one continuous body rather than two parts hinged together. Heavier whips use a metal connecting ring instead.

Keeping It Cracking

Mat-weave is built to last, but no fall is forever. Replace it when the braid opens up badly or the tip stops turning over cleanly. Fraying alone isn't a reason to swap — that's just the fall settling in. Pair it with a fresh popper to bring the crack straight back.
