This is the Manganese Steel Kirin Whip — the heaviest and most powerful whip we make. Where our stainless chains are about elegance and articulation, this one is about depth: the deepest report and the hardest workout in the range.

Manganese steel is the alloy used in industrial lifting chain and mining equipment — hardened for impact, friction and load that would deform lesser metals. We bring that same steel into the workshop, hand-forge it into chain-whip links, and heat-treat each one to lock in the dark blue-black patina.

Available from 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) all the way up to 44 lb (20 kg). If you have outgrown the lighter Kirin chains, this is where you go next.

Industrial Steel, Whip-Forged Form

The chain begins as G80-grade industrial lifting alloy — the same manganese steel certified to lift tons of dead weight on construction sites and in shipyards. Each link is hand-forged, then quenched and tempered through a multi-stage heat treatment: the surface hardens to industrial standards while the core keeps the toughness to absorb shock loads.

The signature blue-black patina is no coating and no paint — it is the natural colour of the steel after heat treatment, sealed in by oxide finishing. It will not chip and it will not flake. It deepens with use, the way a cast-iron pan deepens with care.

Living Steel · Care & Maintenance · 保养

Manganese steel is an industrial alloy, not stainless. It's chosen for hardness and crack power — but it is not rust-proof. Looked after, it lasts decades and the patina deepens. Left damp, it will develop surface rust like any carbon steel.
锰钢是工业合金，不是不锈钢。选它是为了硬度和爆发力，但它不防锈。照料得当能用几十年，包浆越用越沉；长期受潮就会起浮锈，和所有碳钢一样。

  • After each session — wipe down with a dry cloth to take off sweat and moisture.每次练完用干布擦一遍，去掉汗和潮气
  • Storage — keep it somewhere dry, away from windows and damp basements.存放在干燥处，别靠窗、别放潮湿地下室
  • Monthly — a light coat of machine oil keeps the protective surface layer intact.每月上一层薄机油，维持表面保护层
  • If surface rust appears — a quick pass with steel wool and re-oiling restores it. Surface rust is cosmetic, not structural.起浮锈就用钢丝棉擦一下再上油即可，浮锈只是外观问题，不影响结构
Is This Whip For Me? · 我适合这一款吗

Honestly: not if it's your first chain whip. Even the lightest weight here (5.5 lb / 2.5 kg) asks for wrist strength and the basic swing already in place. Start on a Flat or Threaded Kirin, get the form down, then come back — the manganese chain will still be here.

If you already train and you want more depth in the crack and more work for the body, this is the next step.

In China the Kirin Whip is first and foremost a fitness practice. The swing is driven from the waist and hips, so a session works the core, shoulders and grip together — and the rhythm of it is what keeps people coming back.

It is practised by children and by people in their seventies and eighties, in parks and public squares, with regular national gatherings and competitions held across the country. Performance and martial-arts routines grow out of that same base.
