The Iron Mat's twin — same UHMWPE cord, same firm handling, same refusal to fray — braided in a diagonal twill instead of a flat mat. The pattern spirals along the length, and in mixed reds, yellows and blacks it's easily the best-looking fall we make. Choose between the two on looks alone; they perform identically.

The name
铁莲

The braid is known in Chinese as mǎlián duǒ — the iris blossom weave, after the narrow spiralling leaves of the Chinese iris. We kept the flower and added the iron: tiělián, iron iris. Hard cord, soft name.

It sits beside the Iron Mat (铁席) in the same family. Same material, same behaviour, different geometry.

Built Not to Fray

A twisted cord leaves its fibers exposed, which is why softer falls fuzz up with use. This one is braided with a tight outer sheath that locks the fibers inside — abrasion has nothing to catch on. Months in, it still looks new, and the twill pattern stays crisp.

It's also among the most hard-wearing falls we sell. If you crack often, crack hard, or just don't want to think about replacements, this is the low-maintenance choice.

Firm Means Punchy — and Punchy Has a Cost

A stiffer fall holds its line instead of drifting. The tip gets where it's going faster, the crack lands harder, and beginners generally find it much easier to get a clean report out of. If you're building power or chasing volume, firm is what you want.

The trade-off is control. A fast tip is a tip you have less time to steer, so the flowing, multi-directional trick work that soft falls excel at gets noticeably harder here.

Before You Buy

The honest downsides
  • It stiffens with age. Over months of use the braid hardens further.
  • Past a point, the whip goes wooden. When it stops moving fluidly and starts feeling blunt, the fall has hardened past its useful life — replace it.
  • Not the choice for advanced trick work. Too fast and too rigid for wide, slow, controlled arcs.

Worth knowing: this fall doesn't wear out visibly the way a soft one does. It's the feel that tells you, not the look.

These are braided in mixed colourways — reds, yellows, blacks and combinations of them. We can't take colour requests, and we ship whatever is on the bench. Every fall genuinely is a little different from the last.

If you need a specific colour, this isn't the product for you. If you don't mind, you'll get something with real character — and the twill pattern shows the colour mixing off better than any other weave we braid.

Hand-Braided, So Expect Small Variations

Each fall is braided by hand, one at a time, so lengths vary slightly from the figures above. That's the nature of handwork, not a defect — and it makes no difference to how the whip performs. The fall still runs smooth, energy still transfers cleanly, and the crack is unaffected.

Fitting It

On light whips the fall is tied straight onto the chain with cord — a direct tie transmits energy with almost no loss, so whip and fall move as one continuous body. Heavier whips use a metal connecting ring instead.
